Project Background
This Strategic School Improvement Capital Budget (SSICB) package brought together a wide range of essential upgrades across the school site, addressing long-standing issues and creating safer, more functional spaces for students and staff. With a total value of approximately £4.4m, the works covered multiple spaces, from building fabric repairs to major service replacements.
The improvement works were procured as 5 packages, and managed by single contractor, with all the works being completed within restricted time frames over a 12-month period to meet DfE funding requirements and the school’s wider curriculum delivery plan. Breaking the improvements down into different packages allowed all parties to manage and balance the scope of works whilst ensuring the school remained open and functional.
The projects effective management enabled key areas to be delivered in both term time and school holiday periods. The scope included two packages, a Canteen Expansion and a Food Technology Provision, delivered separately.
Roofing Refurbishments
Works Value - £500k
Multiple roof coverings across several blocks were in poor condition, with evidence of water ingress, fragile rooflights, inadequate insulation, and deteriorated rainwater goods. Works included full renewal of the deteriorated coverings, replacement of rainwater systems, improved insulation levels, and safe access provision.
Window and External Door Replacement
Works Value - £200k
Aged single-glazed timber and crittal windows, along with failing doors, were replaced with aluminium alternatives. This addressed safety risks, improved ventilation and thermal performance, and resolved issues with warped frames and non-compliant sash openings.
Science Laboratory Refurbishment

Selected science labs were upgraded with new services, finishes, and furniture to modern standards. Works included mechanical and electrical upgrades, redecoration, and improved layouts to enhance teaching capability.
Changing Room Refurbishment

Fire Door Replacements / Compartmentation Improvements
Works Value - £500k
A fire safety review identified widespread non-compliance of fire doors and inadequate compartmentation. Works included replacing 322 fire doors, improving compartment walls and ceilings, and addressing fire stopping deficiencies in line with survey recommendations.
Complete IT Data Infrastructure Replacement
Works Value - £600K
The aged and inconsistent network was replaced with a single, modern IT infrastructure to support a “one student, one device” approach. Works included new cabling, network hardware, data points, and server upgrades.
Drainage & Resurfacing Replacement
Works Value - £800K
Defective foul and surface water systems caused flooding, blockages, and safety hazards. Works included full replacement of drainage runs, correction of bad connections, installation of new surface water systems, and resurfacing of hardstanding areas.
Safeguarding Improvements
Works Value - £90K
Boundary security was improved with new 3m high fencing, secure gates, and a modern CCTV system providing full site coverage. These upgrades give staff and students a safer, more secure environment for learning and daily activities.
