Project Background
The school’s existing canteen was significantly undersized for the pupil capacity, causing overcrowding during break and lunch times. The existing space was 135m² compared to the BB103 guideline requirement of 342m². This caused operational issues, health and safety concerns, and reliance on unsuitable outdoor seating in poor weather.
Following a feasibility study managed by AEC, the preferred solution was the construction of a single-storey extension to the rear of the school hall and kitchen, increasing the floor area to meet seating capacity needs. The works included integration with the existing kitchen and servery, use of underutilised external space, and delivering all internal finishes and services to match existing facilities.
The project was delivered within the agreed budget and programme, providing a compliant, accessible, and functional canteen space for 380 seated pupils.
