Project Background
AEC was appointed to provide full design services and act as Employer’s Agent for the recent upgrade of the swimming pool facilities at The Basildon Lower Academy.
The project delivered a comprehensive refurbishment of the pool hall, alongside key improvements to the plant room and the modernisation of the changing facilities. Working closely with the client, AEC ensured the scheme enhanced both the functionality and overall user experience of this important school asset.
The completed upgrade provides a refreshed, efficient, and welcoming environment, supporting the continued use of the facilities for both curriculum and community benefit.
A Complete Transformation
Taking you through the before, during and completion stages of the swimming pool refurbishment at The Basildon Lower Academy. From the project’s initial assessment to the final finishing touches, this impressive transformation showcases a major upgrade to an essential school facility.
Project Background & Initial Assessment
After more than 60 years of use, the pool was forced to close due to the failure of key systems, including heating, water circulation, and ventilation services. AEC was engaged to undertake a technical review and feasibility study to identify the essential works required to bring the facility back to a safe and fully compliant standard, supporting both curriculum teaching and extracurricular lettings.
Existing Plant Room Conditions
Here you can see the plant room in its original condition, featuring ageing pumps and filters that had reached the end of their service life. The image also highlights the outdated hand-wash and shower areas, with original tiled finishes in need of renewal.
Key Compliance and Structural Upgrades
To meet current regulations and teaching pool guidance, the pool depth and gradient were adjusted. The pump, filtration, and circulation systems were completely replaced, while the pool structure was altered to remove the aged skimmer troughs. The building fabric was also upgraded and insulated to improve heat retention and ventilation performance.
Mechanical Modernisation & Plant Replacement
A new ventilation system was strategically installed within a redundant room, with ductwork suspended cleanly through the centre of the pool ceiling. The pump and filter plant room was fully refurbished, and the original cast-iron sand filters were so substantial they had to be cut down in situ to allow for safe removal.
Interior Finishes & Facility Transformation
Fresh new tiling across the pool, surround, and perimeter walls has created a modern, safe, and functional finish. Printed PVC cladding provides a striking visual backdrop, adding colour and movement to the space. Robust non-slip flooring, upgraded furniture, and durable finishes throughout the changing areas ensure the facility is built for long-term use and safety.
